Evaluation: Question 7
From the preliminary task my group and I have learnt and improved a lot of things. When writing the script for the stories we always referred to our ideal target audience and what they may want it to sound like. When recording we made sure that the microphone was at a suitable level and found a suitable place to record all the presenter and indoor reporters parts, so that the recording wasn't disturbed by background noise. We were able to edit it a lot better, as before people noted that our volume wasn't consistent throughout the preliminary task and not all the audio clips flowed smoothly; therefore we faded the audio in and out and adjusted the volume of certain parts to sound more fluent. I have learnt a lot from the progression of the preliminary task to our final piece; especially in the use of certain technologies, I am more confident in using audacity and other editing programs. I have also learnt that the quality of an IPhone recording device is just as good as the specialist recording devices; therefore my group was able to record professional quality audio, quickly. However I feel that if given time to do this again I would still change some parts. For instance, we should be more aware of our time scale as were not able to include certain presenter parts (signposting); this meant that the bulletin didn't flow as well as I'd hoped. I would have liked to get our presenter to say "Thanks Jess, now on to our local news" and "Time for sports" so that the groups of stories were broken up but also flowing from one to another. Overall I feel that we have improved a lot from our preliminary task to our final piece in all aspects of the creation of a news bulletin.
Evaluation: Question 6
During this task my whole group learnt a lot about use of technology. I was mainly using the audio recorder and found this simple and easy. Alfie, another group member was better at the editing side of things as he has already had experience here. However I made creative inputs and was taught how to use audacity; I now know how to fade audio in and out, adjust the volume and tone and put a news bulletin together. If i was asked to edit it by myself now I would be able to do that easily as well as improving our product.
Using Audacity:

Evaluation: Question 4
The target audience for this media product would be teenagers; therefore between the ages of 12-18. From the already made 'Ideal target audience profile' we can see that they would probably be full-time students at this age still, potentially living with there parents and maybe having a part time job. Our profile was a 16 year old female and was a full time student, working time at Topshop; this is the demographics of our target audience. For psychographics we thought that the majority would be mainstreamers or aspirerers and this is also where our audience profile came under. She enjoys fashion, mainstream shops, Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora (so mainstream music) and Rom-Coms and X-Factor; therefore usual teenage girl interests. She would listen to our news bulletin because of the local news as it could be affecting her and because of the celebrity and filming stories.
Evaluation: Question 3
We have created a completely new type of bulletin for a station as we feel there is a gap in the market here. However where our news bulletin is a local one, Vectis or the Isle of Wight Radio may broadcast it. This is purely due to the content of the stories within the bulletin being local news mainly. However because we have aimed it at a teen audience the stations like Capital.FM may be interested in showing it on their program, as this is the same audience as theirs. BBC 1 could also want to show it as their audience is slightly similar but also the structure of their news bulletins are the same as how we have laid ours out. On the other hand an internet radio station may also want to show it as this is where most teenagers view media products due to social networking sites, therefore it may reach more of our audience if we show the bulletin on an internet radio station.
Evaluation: Question 2
Our media product consists of a variety of different people
and consequently social groups, mainly representing age; as our target audience
is teenagers. The age of the majority of people involved are similar to the audience
including the presenter and reporters, as well as people involved in Voxpops.
This allows our audience to find the bulletin more interesting as people of
their age are speaking to them. As well as this everyone involved is local
(geographical representation), from and living on the Isle of Wight. This also
creates common ground between the audience and the presenters and reporters;
making it more exciting for the listener as it is about their local towns. One
of the reasons why we chose the presenter we did is because he is a teenager and
being a male will make it fun to listen to for both girls and boys and his
voice has a fairly calming tone within it. Furthermore, we chose the stories we
did for our news bulletin as they are local and interesting and our target
audience expressed an interest for these stories during a questionnaire. They
can relate to them as they are aimed at more of a teenage group and are sourced
from local areas; affecting them, for example the Planet Ice story. Mainly
teenagers will go to planet ice to ice skate therefore the fact that it may be
closing affects them a lot. Also the Cumberbatch Wedding, teenagers are into
celebrity gossip and finding out that a celebrity is having their wedding on
the Isle of Wight would be exciting for them to hear; it could be their home
town. This is how our media product represents age, gender and geographical
social groups.
Ideal Target Audience Model
Name: Chloe
Age: 16
Gender: Female
This ideal target audience profile helped us when creating our new bulletin as we thought of Chloe and what she would like to hear in our product. She is a typical teenage girl and is a good representation of the majority of our target audience.
Age: 16
Gender: Female
- Full time student
- Works part time in Topshop
- Mainstreamer, with a slight mix of Aspirerer
- Live in Carisbrooke, Isle Of Wight
- Mum is a nurse
- Dad is a Policeman
- Into the latest fashion
- Likes pretty boys
- Reads Bliss magazine
- Watches Made in Chelsea
- Enjoys talent shows e.g. X-Factor
- Loves celebrity gossip
- Loves abroad sunny holidays
- Music = Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, Sam Smith, Meghann Trainor
- Likes dolling up and house parties (slightly rebellious)
- Shops at Topshop, New Look and H+M
- Tries to eat healthy, body conscious
- Uses social networking sites regularly (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)

This ideal target audience profile helped us when creating our new bulletin as we thought of Chloe and what she would like to hear in our product. She is a typical teenage girl and is a good representation of the majority of our target audience.

Script for Weather- Copy
Actual Script:
The forecast for today shows blue skies and sunshine. So it's a great day to get your flip-flops on, head down to the beach and grab and ice cream. Highs of twenty seven degrees and a small chance of a slight breeze.
Analysis:
We chose to present our weather forecast like this as it is fairly informal making it more exciting for the listener as well as informing them of the weather. It helps create a more friendly, conversational vibe for our target audience.
Script for Wedding Story- Cue and Clip
Hollywood actor Benedict Cumberbatch is expected to marry fiancee Sophie Hunter on the Isle of Wight. They're due to marry at a ceremony this weekend at the church in Mottistone before a wedding reception at Mottistone Manor. His Sherlock co-star and best man, Martin Freeman says the Isle of Wight is the perfect location.
Martin Freeman: The Isle of Wight is the perfect place for a wedding. I am honored to be a part of this great celebration, and just hope the weather holds out and I don't mess up my speech.
Preliminary Task
Here is our Preliminary Task; in this first task my group came up with a name and jingle for our radio as well as being able to see which members work best in certain roles or tasks. This enabled us to work together as a group. Feedback that we got from others and that we made ourselves consisted of; the volume throughout our radio piece not being consistent. Therefore we need to work on how we edit certain parts of the audio. Also we were told that each audio recording didn't really flow nicely and so we faded in and out of each part so that it was fluent in the end.

Psychographics
- Mainstreamers - Seek Security
- Aspirers - Seek Status
- Succeeders - Seek Control
- Resigned - Seek Survival
- Explorers - Seek Discovery
- Strugglers - Seek Escape
- Reformers - Seek Enlightment
Psychographics is a way that media institutions can obtain their target audiences through peoples personal like and dislikes; rather than placing them into categories like demographics. Putting demographics and psychographics together to obtain a target audience what be much more efficient as you can take into account: Gender, Age, Class as well as Personal Preference.
Pros- More about a person personality (likes as dislikes).
Cons- Takes time and money, Can overlap/ be in two (may change due to mood).

Script for Festival Story - Cue and Voxpop
With the Isle of Wight Festival rapidly approaching, the eleventh to the fourteenth of June is looking to be a weekend to remember. With the final headliner being announced next Friday, rumors are already speculating about a possible appearance form the recently reformed Blur. They would join the likes of the already confirmed performers: Fleetwood Mac, The Prodigy, Pharrell Williams, Paolo Nutini and The Black Keys.
We asked students and teachers at Christ The King College whether they were planning to attend the festival this summer.
(Vox Pop)

Script for International Story - Cue and Voicepiece
Cue:
Hollywood Film, The Interview, has earnt its producers almost seven times more money through its online release than at the box office. Our entertainment correspondent, reports on the effects this could have on cinemas as a whole...
Voicepiece:
The interview; the film that brought Sony to its knees at the end of last year, has now provided us with an insight to the future of cinema. After the initial hack on Sony regarding the controversial film about the assassination of the North Korean leader, the future of potential blockbuster remained uncertain. But it was later announced the film would receive a limited cinema release, as well as online, which allow people to pay to watch the film without even leaving their homes.
Its been revealed that the film grossed almost seven times more from the online sales, a revenue of forty million dollars, compared with box office sales, earning only five point nine million dollars. Could these statistics change the way we view our films in the future?
Cue:
Thanks again from, Jess. Now in local news...

Reporter Jaimee has caught up with Ben:

Intro and Outro of Presenter Script (rough)
Intro:
"Hi, it's Chris, and you're listening to White Waves Radio. It's 9.00 and here are our headlines for the day...
(headlines and rest of the bulletin here)
Outro:
"If you want to find out more information from any of our stories just head to our website, WightWaves.co.uk. More updates in an hour...
(Jingle)
Analysis:
We have chosen to have the presenter speak more informal due to the fact that our target audience wanted this to be able to relate to them and feel more in a conversation; than being told information.

My Radio Writing
After writing for our radio bulletin here are the 10 rules I feel will make the script successful:
- Write as if you are talking to a friend. (contractions)
- Simple sentences. (one idea, one sentence)
- Two or three sentences for a cue; four for a copy. (8 for a voicer)
- Write numbers as words e.g 2010 = Two Thousand and Ten. This makes it clearer for the news reader to read.
- Ella rose, 17, from Newport --> Doesn't make sense. Would need to put --> Seventeen-Year-Old, Ella Rose from Newport.
- Cue-In Line- Vary it! Introduces clip of another voice. Paraphrase the first line of audio.
- Write names phonetically e.g Sarah Leahy = Sare-Rah Lee-Hee.
- Round up statistics and put them in context e.g 260,00 hectares = the size of three football pitches. (it is easier to understand)
- Don't use the word today!
- Read it aloud to ensure it reads correctly.
Before writing the radio scripts here are some practices my group did on some newspaper articles:
On his eleventh birthday Jack Sheaf received a present of his own published book entitled Amazing Uncle Ben. Inspired by his primary school teacher Kieren Larwood, who received a signed copy. Jack also sent copies to Prince Harry and David Walliams.
After editing however and discussing with the rest of the class, everyone made suggestions and the final outcome was this:
An eleven-year-old from Wroxall received a birthday present of his very own published book entitled "My Amazing Uncle Ben". Jack Sheaf was inspired by his primary teacher Kieren Larwood who was given a signed copy. Jack also sent copies to Prince Harry and David Wallaims.
This is a lot better as the beginning is a lot more catchy and the audience know straight away why they should keep listening.
Script for Football Story - Copy
This is the second sports story we are featuring.
First version:
Two Island football clubs are fined and disqualified from cup competitions. Ventnor and Cowes teams have been removed form competitions due to the fielding of ineligible players. After both teams succeeded astonishing wins they are no longer allowed to compete; whilst the teams they had beaten get reinstated.
After editing it I decided that the word "Ineligible" was to hard for the presenter to say fluently and due to the target audience being teenagers decided to make it sound less formal and more like a conversation.
After edits:
Two Island league football clubs have been fined and disqualified from junior cup competitions. Ventnor and Cowes junior teams have been removed form all remaining matches because they fielded players already playing for higher division teams. After both teams succeeded astonishing wins they are no longer allowed to compete; whilst the teams they had beaten get reinstated.

Script for Rugby Story - Cue and Clip
My group have decided to feature 3 sports stories; Rugby, Football and Swimming are the main sports with competitions around the island.
Here is my first version before editing:
Christ the King College celebrates an astonishing win of Twenty Seven to Five with their under thirteen's rugby team. Their first game of the season and playing an away game. The teams coach Kieran Leahy said he was proud of the boys. So we congratulate Nelson, Hollis, Bushnell, Williams, Sanderson, Davis, Dyer, Puckett, Early, Ward, Buckley, Lee, Smith, Cole, Turner and Wood from the Christ the King team.
And after editing:
Cue: Christ the King College are celebrating an astonishing win of Twenty Seven to Five with their under thirteen's rugby team. It was their first game of the season and playing an away game. The teams coach Keiran Leahy said he was proud of the boys.
Clip: The boys played exceptionally. After all their hard work in training they managed to secure the result they wanted. I am so proud to be their coach and have them represent the school.
Edits that were made and why:
I got rid of the boys names at the end because it was unnecessary and enabled us to create the story into a cue and clip having Kieran Leahy talk about the boys instead. This will make it sound more interesting for the listener.

Script For Ice Rink Story - Copy
My group split our roles up and each took a local story to research about and come up with the cue or copy script.
After editing my original note, it was this:
Mp Andrew Turner is backing the campaign to save the island's ice rink. Ryde based Planet Ice has reached the end of its fifteen year lease. The rink is due to close on March the twenty fifth with the loss of forty jobs. However local residents are planning a campaign to save the rink.
This is a lot better as it is less wordy for the audience to hear and has a more catchy opening sentence.

Structure of News Bulletin
- Jingle
- Introduction of Presenter
- Headlines (BED)- Interview Film/Sony Hacking, Benedict Cumberbatch's Wedding
- The Interview Film /Sony Hacking = Cue + Clip
- Isle of Wight Festival = Cue + Voxpop
- Ice Rink Closure = Copy
- Cumberbatch's Wedding = Cue + Clip
- Sport stories (BED)
- Local Football Story = Copy
- Local Rugby Story = Cue + Clip
- Local Swimming Story - Outside Specialist Reporter Broadcast at Pool = Cue + Wrap
- Weather - Today and Tonight's Forecast
- Outro of Presenter
- Jingle
Analysis:
We chose this as our running order and included these stories due to the questionnaire results from earlier. Many enjoyed international stories; however because our task was for a local radio we only chose one story and it was the Sony Hacking/ Interview film as we thought this could still affect our viewers due to potential cinema changes. As well as this we chose 3 local stories, as our viewers enjoyed celebrity gossip we mentioned Benedict Cumberbatch's wedding taking place on the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight Festival interests our target audiences age group and the Ice Rink is also more targeted at a younger age; however also including slight political aspects. We then decided to include 3 local sports stories as our audience enjoyed sports and achievement as well as scandals. The 3 most popular Island sports are Football, Rugby and Swimming for our audiences age group. Therefore we varied the positivity and negativity of the stories so that they stayed interested throughout the news bulletin. Final the majority said they wanted weather and so put that in last so that they had something to look forward to, making it more of an informal report and keeping the audiences hopes up.

Analysis of Results
I can interpret our results to help create a news bulletin that our target audience would be interested in hearing. The questionnaire was only given to teens between the ages of 15 and 17 as this is who we are aiming at.
The first graph is fairly simple and just stating the number of males and females that were asked.
The second graph shows that our sample of teenagers asked do listen to radio regularly if not everyday and only a few people never listen to radio. This is good as we don't really need to change the format of how radio is presenter because it interests the majority.
The third graph highlights the most popular radio stations for our target audience. Capital and Radio1 are top two therefore we will try and make our news bulletin similar layout to these two stations as well as placing in some originality.
The fourth graph states that the type of music listened to by this audience is predominantly Pop and Rock which still fits in with the two radio stations mentioned above.
In the fifth graph besides the fact that our audience listens to radio because of the music, in terms of a news bulletin we can see that they enjoy radio for news and interviews; therefore we should try and include these features.
We should include Local news, some Worldwide events that are relevant to our target audience, Interviews/ Celebrity gossip and Weather. This is because in the sixth graph the majority of our target audience prefers to listen to news on the radio for these features.
Finally the seventh and eighth graph show that our target audience don't mind what gender the presenter is, however even though the majority again said the didn't mind the age of the presenter, a good proportion would like them to be similar to there age. Therefore we will try and find a presenter more around the target audiences age so they can relate to them and enjoy the bulletin more due to the informal language used by the presenter.
